Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

         

          I want to fill you in on all the details for this upcoming choir performance for the  

8^th grade class only

Monday, October 26th  

We will be performing at the Forest Hills Jazz Festival at The FH Fine Arts Center on Forest Hills Ave.

          We will be meeting at Crossroads in the cafeteria around

 5:15 PM.  We will eat, drink, and be merry!!!  Your child should have given me $3.00 to cover the pizza!  To keep prices down, please send in some kind of dessert or chips for the evening if you can!!  I will get the pizza and water bottles to drink!  Your child can bring that in anytime on or before Monday evening. CARE TO CHAPERONE? EMAIL ME!!!!!!

          We will then go to the choir room about 6:00 for a quick warm-up and sing through our two choir songs.  At 6:20 we will board the buses out front and be on our way to Forest Hills Fine Arts Center by 6:45 or so.  The concert begins at 7PM and we are the 2nd act I believe.  If you would like to join us, tickets are $5.00 at the door!!!    Students are to wear their choir shirt, jeans, and NO flip flops. They can wear tennis shoes, boots, clogs, etc… just no sandals with open toes.  Jeans should be clean without any rips.  Some students have NOT paid for their choir shirt!! Please get that money in NOW along with their $3 pizza money!!! Checks made out to Northview Vocal Music!

          We will return around 9:30 or 10 PM but I will have them call you as we leave the concert so that you don’t have to wait or so YOU won’t be late.  It will be a super fun experience as we are only 1 of 2 Middle school choirs!  All the rest of the groups are HS or College level choirs.  The last group to perform will be the award winning, Gold Company from Western Michigan University!!  They are great!!!!

          This is a required performance so please be sure to get your child to Crossroads at least by 6:00 unless they will be joining us for dinner at 5:15.  Again, please be prepared to pick up your child that evening around 9:30 or 10PM in Crossroads parking lot. ASSIGNMENT #1 FOR CHOIR:

LIVE Performance Critique 

All choir students will have papers due through out the year.  The two main assignments worth 75 points each semester are the LIVE Performance Papers.

LIVE PERFORMANCE CRITIQUE 

DUE DATE

1st semester due:  FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2015

            You will need to see one LIVE musical performance per semester and write a paper on it.  The paper will consist of your constructive comments on what you thought of the performance.  The performance needs to be attended on your own time.  Every month I will list the musical performances going on in the district with time, cost, place, etc...  It is your job to write the information down and make it to one of these concerts.  If you want to see a performance on your own, you may do this as well.  Be sure to check with me before you go to be sure it is aLIVE musical performance.  Some shows that are not LIVE musical performance would be:

            1.  A play (no music)

            2.  A show on ice. (the music is taped not LIVE)

            3.  A live television show (you are not seeing it LIVE)

            Lastly, when your report is finished, you will need to attach your ticket stub, program, and have a parent signature saying that you did indeed attend this concert.

NOTE:  YOU WILL NEED TO TURN IN THE REPORT WITHIN 1 MONTH 

OF SEEING THE PERFORMANCE OR IT WILL NOT COUNT!!!

RUBRIC

1. One FULL page typed – PLEASE USE SPELL AND GRAMMAR CHECK!!

2.  Normal margins, normal heading, double spaced

3.  Size 12 font (UNDERLINE SONG TITLES)

4.  Opening paragraph, body, closing paragraph (REALLY IMPORTANT!!!)

5.  Use of musical terminology (at least 3 terms) such as:  use of dynamics, tone, intonation, blending within sections and overall group, annunciation, diction, open vowels, lifting of soft palette, diaphragmatic breathing, etc...

WHEN:  LAST DAY OF SCHOOL! Friday, June 5 from 11 - 3

TIMES:  Leave Crossroads by school bus at 11am, get there around 11:30, eat lunch (eat for the whole 3 hours if you want), play together, leave at 2:30, back at Crossroads by 3pm!  Parents pick up at Crossroads AT 3PM! Leave for summer break!! J

HOW MUCH:  $15 for everything!!!

WHAT DOES IT GET YOU: All you can eat pizza/pasta buffet (for up to 3 hours), 3 activities, $20 video game Credits. 

You can bring more money and do more activities if you want but we only have the 3 hours - it will be busy there!!

WHY:  To spend some quality time with Mrs. Hjelm and your choir family before 8^th grade heads to HS and 7^th grade separates for the summer!  I hope everyone will join!!!

Hey parents!!!  Hope you all have a wonderful, restful break with your kiddos!!  Let me say how much I am enjoying them in class!!  They are amazing singers!!!

7th grade choir is working so very hard on their music for our next concert!  They have been polite, respectful, and so very professional!  Please congratulate them on their work effort!!! 

I can't wait to see what they will bring to the table as 8th graders.  WOW!!

Now, 8th grade has been very chatty and not as respectful as a choir as I would like - I would appreciate it if you could talk with them about their work ethic!!  They are amazing singers but they are not working up to their potential!  However, I love them dearly and that will NOT change!!  I just want their final concert here at Crossroads 

to be the very best it can be!!

Whitecaps Performance - Monday, April 20, 2015 NOON

Hey Parents and/or Guardians!!!

            We are so excited!!  Well, at least I am!!  J  8^th grade choir and I are ready to perform at the Whitecaps so I wanted to fill you in on our last details!!!  We will run our song a little in the choir room during class time and then report to the bus out front at 11am!!  We need to be at the ball field by 11:15 so we must leave CR by 11:00AM!!!  We will return around 2:30PM so kids can get on their normal bus home!!  Students should wear their choir shirt and jeans.  The Whitecaps requested that we look uniform so it will be easier to stick together!  Plus – we look so good in them!!!  Start looking now if you haven’t seen it for awhile!! J

There are a few different options for pricing.

If they want an actual seat in the bleachers the tix cost will be $15. If they want to go a little cheaper, the lawn seat tix cost will be $12.  Personally, I don’t sit much during the game so I will be buying the cheap tix.  Most kids tend to walk around so I would recommend the cheaper tix but it’s up to you!! Either way, the cost will cover their ticket in, a hot dog, a small drink, and the bus ride!!  I need to pre-order the tickets so please send in that money ASAP.  Checks made out to NORTHVIEW VOCAL MUSIC!!!  If you would like to join and/or chaperone, your ticket will be the same price so feel free to order tickets for you & your family and I will get your tickets as well!! 

I would like all money before spring break so please SEND IN BEFORE April 2, 2015
