Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

         

          I want to fill you in on all the details for this upcoming Monday, October 24th choir performance for the 8^th grade class only.  We will be performing at the Forest Hills Jazz Festival at The FH Fine Arts Center on Forest Hills Ave.

          We will be having a pizza party and meeting at Crossroads in the cafeteria around 5 PM before the rehearsal and concert.  We will eat, drink, and be merry!!!  Our choir shirts ended up being a little cheaper than I thought so the extra money will help with the pizza and I will pay the difference!  If your child has NOT PAID FOR HIS/HER SHIRT – please send that money in ASAP!

$13 Cash or Checks - made out to Northview Vocal Music!

THIS IS WHAT I NEED FROM PARENTS:

 I NEED CHAPERONES and I will cover your ticket price if you join!  We have 97 students so I need approximately 9 -10 parents to come with us! If you come early to help with the dinner and clean up that would be great too! You can follow us in your car if you don’t want to ride the bus but I do need at least 5 to ride the bus – any takers????

I NEED DESSERTS SENT IN FOR THE PIZZA PARTY – I will get pizza and water bottles, but I cannot cover dessert – can you send some in PLEASE?? Those can be sent in anytime on Monday! Again, we have approximately 97 students but only about 85 will be having dinner! Only … lol

We will go to the choir room about 5:40 for warm-up and sing through our two choir songs.  At 6:15 we will board the buses out front and be on our way to Forest Hills Fine Arts Center by 6:45 or so.  The concert begins at 7PM and we are the 2nd act. If you would like to join us, tickets are $5.00 at the door!!!     

Students are to wear their choir shirt, jeans, NO flip flops or sweat pants. They can wear tennis shoes, boots, clogs, etc… just no sandals with open toes.  Jeans should be clean without any rips. 

          We will return somewhere around 9-9:30pm but I will have them call you as we leave the concert so that you don’t have to wait or so YOU won’t be late.  It will be a super fun experience as we are only 1 of 2 middle school choirs performing!  All the rest of the groups are HS or College level choirs. 

          This is a required performance so please be sure to get your child to Crossroads at least by 5:45 unless they will be joining us for dinner at 5pm.  Again, please be prepared to pick up your child that evening around 9pm in Crossroads parking lot.  Thanks a bunch! Questions or Concerns?

CHOIR RULES!!! XOXOXO Mrs. Hjelm

Well, we are 2 weeks down - woop woop!!!  I am totally enjoying ALL MY CHOIR KIDS! They have done a great job in setting up our social contract in class!  If you are not sure what that is, ask them about it!  They came up with the classroom rules themselves, got them all written down on a large sheet of paper, everyone in the class has signed it, and it will be posted by Monday morning! Some students have absolutely NO PROBLEM following the contract but there are a few (mainly 8th grade unfortunately) that are having some troubles!  We WILL MAKE MISTAKES - but I am hoping with time, things will get better in class as students grow, mature, start learning music, and really begin to care more about each other!  

The Choir COURSE SYLLABUS went home last week Friday and it was due TODAY!!  I meant to send out a reminder yesterday but forgot so....      I will give all students one more day - actually 3 days - to get it turned in for FULL CREDIT if it's in by MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19!  print a new one on the right side of this page

I need choir shirt LOGO'S by Monday or I will design it myself!  Every year we have students draw a logo which will be put on our choir shirt that we wear for the whole school year!  I have talked with the kiddos about it and have only seen 2 LOGOS! Have your ARTSY kids work on one this weekend!  this is what it HAS TO HAVE:

SOME DESIGN with either a wildcat, music notes, microphone, cool saying, paw print, etc....  do not use lined paper     

MUST BE NEAT, DARK PEN OR MARKER, AND WELL WRITTEN!

You can send in shirt money anytime in a sealed envelope but be sure your child's name is on it, their choir number, and the hour they have my class!

What a day this has been, what a rare mood I'm in....

.

Kids were AMAZING TODAY!!!  Both groups sang and acted so professional and mature!  Absolutely no hints of immaturity!  You all should be VERY PROUD OF YOUR SINGERS!  

Special Thanks to all the parents who sent in drinks, desserts, plates, cups, etc...
We really could not have done this without you (well obviously - I would have no singers)! 

HUGE thanks to all the chaperons, again, we would not have been able to go without your support and time!

8TH GRADE received a score of 95 which is 1 point away from an excellent rating.  So they received a GOOD RATING! Which is still a wonderful score - more like a 2 or a B+ !!  I really feel they earned an excellent rating as their music was really difficult - 4part a cappella is nothing to sneeze at!!  They also got a perfect score on their sight-reading which means they are DONE WITH SIGHT-READING FOR THE YEAR! I know they will be happy about that! They should be super proud of their singing and their behavior!  I couldn't be happier with them!  

7TH GRADE received a score of 104 which is an EXCELLENT RATING!  They really stepped up their game and again, nailed the sight-reading! I am so proud and happy for their hard work! They are also DONE WITH SIGHT-READING FOR THE YEAR!

On Monday, we will head back to the IMC to finish our typing of the Concert Critique and their LIVE performance papers.  On Tuesday & Wednesday, we will lay low and watch a movie, and on Thursday, we do not have normal class as it is Diversity Day!  After next week, we start pops concert music so we will be back to being busy!!  That's what is coming up for choirs!  

Thanks again to all parents for sharing your singers with me! I may get a little upset with them at times but it is days like this that make me proud to be a music teacher in Northview! Thanks to all parents who helped make today a success!  We couldn't have done it without you! Thanks to all choir members for all your hard work today!  You should be proud!

Dear Parents and/or guardians:

               Well, can you believe it?  We are more than half way through the school year!  It amazes me every year how fast time flies.  Well, here in choir, we are very busy preparing for District Choral Festival which is THIS Friday, March 4. I am excited!! After a week of issues with busing, we are now set to take both 7^th and 8^th grade choirs to Grandville HS and show them what we got!

THERE ARE A FEW CHANGES SO READ ON!!!

8^TH GRADE CHOIR will be leaving Crossroads by bus at 7:40 AM in order to be there by our warm up time which is 8:20 AM. We will finish up with everything by 9:20 AM.  At this point, 8^th grade choir will head back to Crossroads Middle School and go directly to 4^th hour which is my class!  However, I will NOT BE AT SCHOOL AS I WILL NEED TO STAY AT FESTIVAL WITH 7^TH GRADE CHOIR who will be dropped off approx. around 9:30 am when 8^th graders leave! 8^th grade will report to choir room, watch a movie, and when class is done, they will go on with their normal class schedule until 12 NOON when we have our luncheon with 7^th grade choir (we will return with 7^th grade around that time and have our pizza party!) WHEW!!  With me so far?

7^th GRADE CHOIR will meet in choir room at 8:50 AM.  I will have someone there to take attendance, make sure they are in the proper attire, and get them on the bus by approximately 9:05 and be at Grandville HS by 9:30 or so.  As they get off the bus, 8^th GRADE will get ON the bus with the chaperons.  I again, will not be with them so I will need chaperons on the bus to head back to Crossroads.  7^TH GRADE CHOIR starts their warm-up at 10:20 AM and will finish up by 11:20 AM. 

After we get our scores, 7^th GRADE will head back to Crossroads for a homemade pizza luncheon in cafeteria by our very own cooks around 12:05 PM.   All students will just use their lunch card, pay $2.50, or if they would rather, they can bring in a home lunch as well.  I talked to the ladies in the café, and they will serve their homemade pizza with salad bar/veggies and fruit - it will be little more special then the regular lunch for the rest of the school.  If students want a 2^nd piece of pizza, they will need to pay another $2.50 either as cash or card.  The pizza will be a good size piece to begin with but just in case they are still hungry. Chaperons – same price for your lunch $2.50 – you can pay as we go through the line!

PARENTS: please send in your dessert for that day in the morning! I will get someone to bring them down before noon!  It will be a long (and rewarding J) day I am sure!! They will be starving!

ATTIRE: Students need to wear their choir shirt (which should be wrinkle free), black pants, black socks, and black shoes.  I would prefer no tennis shoes but if that is all they have, they can wear them only if they are black with black laces!!  Please NO WHITE SHOES and no sandals with toes hanging out for the girls. We want to represent Northview the best way possible so please talk to your child about the way they present themselves in dress and behavior.

              

I have approx. 160 students going to festival so I will need all Chaperons that have signed up to come along for the ride!!  I realize some parents get bus sick so if you need to drive out there, that is cool but anyone willing to take bus with kids would be appreciated.  REMEMBER: I WILL NOT be on bus ride back with 8^th grade and I WILL NOT be on bus ride OUT with 7^th grade so I need a few parents to ride with each class so they are not alone on the bus. 

8^TH GRADE CHAPERONS, if you want to come back for the luncheon at noon, that would be appreciated.  If not, I think I will have enough 7^th GRADE CHAPERONS to help out! Questions or concerns?

I have requested Friday morning with a return time of around 12:30 and then we will have a homemade pizza luncheon served in the cafeteria (with desserts and pop hopefully sent in by you lovely parents!!) The pizza will be part of special school luncheon just for us and students can use their school ID's or pay $2.50!  It is always a lot of fun! As soon as I know the date and time, I will let you know!  

Any students who would like to bring their own lunch to school that day are most welcome.  

They can grab it when we get back to school after the festival before we head into cafeteria!!

I WILL NEED CHAPERONES!
